Frugal Passat
Volkswagen is set to unveil a frugal version of its Passat that can run up to 870 miles between fillups.
It will be part of its extended range of Bluemotion vehicles. The unveiling would be held in next month’s Geneva Motor Show.
The new Passat would be available later this year in both sedan and wagon styles. It is rumored to be able to achieve a combined city/highway average of 47 miles per gallon (mpg). That would be an improvement of more than 6.6 mpg compared to the standard Passat model, thanks to a series of upgrades similar to what can now be seen in the Polo Bluemotion.
Carbon dioxide emissions would be lower by nearly 10 percent, which would allow the car to conform to the European Commission’s proposed emissions standard for 2008 and beyond.
Industry sources had said that the front-wheel-drive Passat Bluemotion would be powered by a specially tuned version of Volkswagen’s 105 HP 1.9 L four-cylinder diesel engine, alongside a six-speed gearbox.
The Passat Bluemotion would be in a reworked Passat body shell with aerodynamic upgrades, which includes a new front bumper and grille designed to reduce drag. Other features include low-rolling-resistance tires and a reworked gearbox with taller 5th and 6th gears.
